In 2016, Rosebank Public School participated in a very special Community Service project.
One of our mums, Jacki Oliver, had set herself a goal of raising $10 000 for The Hunger Project (THP), an organisation committed to ending hunger and poverty globally.
We decided that we would like to help Jacki reach her goal, knowing that our help would contribute to ending hunger.
Students who chose to participate set themselves BIG PICTURE goals, like Reducing Carbon Emissions or Cleaning up the Planet. They identified milestones that would show they were on the way to making a difference, like collecting 5, then 10 then 20 bags of litter. Students either sought sponsorship from friends and families or set up their own entrepreneurial projects to reach monetary goals ("I want to raise $100 for TP").
The project was a HUGE success. Students who set themselves Goals for Humanity raised $1888.30 for The Hunger Project (THP). This money was in addition to the $260 the children had already donated, the total takings from the School Disco they had organised and run themselves. Altogether, Rosebank students raised $2140 for THP and children learned a lot about goal-setting, persistence, planning, collaboration and kindness. We're so proud!
Learning to love and care for others helps children grow a sense of belonging and wellbeing. They feel good about themselves when they help others. Goals for Humanity gave us a chance to help people in our local community and across the world.
